Linfox and Queensland Government partnership brings relief to outback communities

Linfox is partnering again with the Queensland Government to ensure the affordable and reliable delivery of essential goods to some of Australia’s most remote outback towns.

Through the rail freight partnership, the Queensland Government supports transport services on the Central West Line, assisting local businesses and reducing cost-of-living pressures for residents in regional Queensland.

Linfox General Manager Queensland Operations, Stephen Hind said “the Central West Line spans over 780 km, connecting communities from Emerald to Hughenden and Winton.

“We provide two return services per week for communities in Alpha, Barcaldine, Emerald and Longreach out of the Linfox Rockhampton Intermodal Terminal, with services travelling to Winton regularly as well.”

The rail network plays a critical role in transporting non-perishable groceries, white goods, building materials and containerised freight to sustain the community and local businesses.

Linfox employs six local people where Queensland Rail and strategic partner, Aurizon provide the train drivers and maintenance crews needed to operate the services.

“We’re passionate about employing local people and maintaining an active rail presence in these regional communities,” said Stephen.

“The partnership also strongly aligns with our efforts to move selected freight from road to rail as we strive to decarbonise our supply chain.”

Keeping outback towns thriving

Linfox Terminal Coordinator Sherryl Standfast, a long-time Winton resident, sees first-hand the impact of these deliveries.

After 18 years in the industry, Sherryl continues to find joy in her work.

“The job has grown with me,” she said.

“My official title is Terminal Coordinator, but I do a bit of everything – from operating forklifts and securing rail traffic to last mile deliveries in a 12 pallet UD truck. It keeps things interesting!”

With a population of around 1,600, Winton is largely sustained by sheep and cattle farming.

“We’re very far from the well-worn supply chain routes of major cities,” Sherryl explains.

“This partnership means our community has access to everyday basics at affordable prices, keeping our town sustainable and thriving.”
