‘I’m one of the lucky ones’

How a melanoma diagnosis inspired a world-class cancer treatment and research centre.

When Paula Fox AO was diagnosed with melanoma, it changed her life. And now, it’s changing the lives of thousands of others.

“My dermatologist found a melanoma on my back a few years ago,” recalled Paula.

“Two surgeries and 45 stitches later I’m very fortunate to be here today.

“But I was one of the lucky ones. Many people don’t survive melanoma,” she said.

Following her diagnosis, Paula began to better understand the threat melanoma poses in Australia.

“Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world, with over 18,000 cases diagnosed each year,” said Paula.

A conversation with her surgeon at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne planted the seed for what would become a world-class centre.

“I said to my doctor: ‘I would love to build you a melanoma hospital’ and he just laughed and thought I was joking.

“And I said, ‘no, I’m really serious.’

“I got my family together to explain what I wanted to do, and they backed me all the way,” explained Paula.

From there, she began rallying support from state and federal governments and local philanthropists.

“There was a lot of interest and as we learnt more about the need, it went from being a new hospital wing to a whole centre,” she said.

In 2024, the $152.4 million Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre officially opened at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

A world-first partnership between Monash University, The Alfred and Minderoo Foundation, the centre revolutionises the treatment of melanoma and other cancers by bringing clinical trials, research and care under one roof.

Professor Mark Shackleton, Director of Oncology at Alfred Health and Professor of Oncology at Monash University said the partnership has the potential to save countless lives.

“Melanoma remains one of Australia’s biggest killers, but this partnership has the potential to change that,” said Professor Shackleton.

“The Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre is improving the way we deliver care, while expanding access to clinical trials, new technologies and emerging therapies.”

“With Alfred clinicians working side-by-side with researchers and scientists from Monash University, we can offer patients the most cutting-edge and evidence-based care available.

We’re bringing together cutting-edge technologies, from cancer registries and medical imaging to genomics and large-scale data, to strengthen our ability to detect, diagnose, treat, and ultimately help prevent cancer.”

The Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre’s journey from an idea to a world-class facility was no small feat.

“Paula was determined to make this project work.” said Linfox Founder, Lindsay Fox AC.

“She negotiated with state and federal governments and secured the support of key partners, including the Minderoo Foundation.

“Whatever Paula wants, Paula gets!” joked Lindsay.
