Essential networks: Scale through rail in Queensland

Linfox is growing stronger through continued investment in its intermodal network across Queensland.

As Australia re-focuses on self-reliance in the wake of COVID-19, efficient, national networks carry even greater importance to support all regions and keep communities stocked.

Linfox is investing in the future to improve rail freight capability throughout Queensland’s rail corridors, as it explores opportunities to shift more freight onto rail throughout the state.

“This will super-charge growth and efficiency for our customers, as we continue to develop the foundations that underpin high-performing, connected supply chains.”

Mark Mazurek, CEO Linfox Logistics Australia and New Zealand.

Rail makes sense

The Sunshine State is vast, with the distance between Brisbane and Cairns roughly the same as Melbourne and Brisbane. Travelling by road for such long distances is challenging for drivers, puts pressure on fleet, wears down the state’s road infrastructure and increases safety risks for drivers and the community.

With Australia’s demand for freight forecast to increase significantly in coming decades, rail is well positioned to share the load with road transport.

Moving freight from road to rail also has environmental benefits. It is in line with Linfox’s journey to zero net emissions and its ongoing commitment to act sustainably.

The numbers: Linfox’s Intermodal rail network in Queensland

  • Up to 60 rail services per week
  • Around 150,000TEU moved per annum
  • 500+ rail wagons
  • 1,000+ rail containers
  • Transporting food and grocery, retail beverages, export meat, industrial products and dangerous goods

Strategic rail infrastructure and site investment

Linfox has added to its strategic rail property portfolio in Queensland with new asset purchases of rail tracks and depots in Emerald and Rockhampton, providing direct connections to the Queensland Rail network.

Linfox’s strategic rail locations capitalise on the 1700-kilometre, $9.3 billion Inland Rail project connecting Melbourne and Brisbane via inland New South Wales.

Set to open in 2026, this key infrastructure will improve connectivity to move goods more quickly and cost-effectively between farms, cities and ports in Australia to domestic and international markets. With one double-stacked train able to carry the same volume of freight as 110 B-double trucks, the boost to supply chain efficiency is clear.

“We are always looking for smarter ways to transport for our customers, which is why we are excited about Inland Rail,” said Linfox President Intermodal, Ian Strachan.
