Delivering record fruit volumes sustainably from the Northern Territory

Linfox Intermodal has delivered its largest seasonal fruit volumes on record in the Northern Territory, transporting over 1,200 loaded rail containers of produce for Coles from Katherine and Darwin to Adelaide, and the rest of the country from the new railhead DC in Adelaide, South Australia.

Due to perfect growing conditions in the Northern Territory this year, seasonal fruit produce has more than doubled the volume of freight movements for Linfox than previous seasons.

Linfox has recently renewed its partnership with Coles Collect in the Northern Territory to continue growing the produce market that supports local farmers and Australian communities with essential produce and retail supermarket freight.

With the increase in volumes, both companies realise the benefits of using rail transport to reduce their carbon footprint, especially over long distances. Linfox continues to invest in its rail network and provide more containerised freight for our customers.

The produce season runs from April to December with peak volumes occurring in October and November each year. Melons, Mangos and Pumpkins are the primary produce from the region.

Linfox President Intermodal, Cameron Trewin explained that by using rail to transport produce from the Northern Territory to South Australia, Linfox has removed over 400 triple road train movements from local roads. This shift has resulted in significant sustainability benefits and further provides a safe and efficient mode of transport.

“Moving freight from road to rail plays a big role in reducing carbon emissions. This season, we have saved over 2,688 tonnes of CO2-e by removing hundreds of road train trips from our roads,” said Cameron.

“Our customers rely on us to move high volumes and we continue to demonstrate how we can deliver safely, securely, efficiently and sustainably.

“Linfox’s expertise and resilience in challenging and remote conditions has supported what is our best executed produce season in the NT on record.

“As we continue to deliver groceries locally in the NT and along the SA/NT corridor, we are transporting more volume for our customers on our rail network now more than we ever have before.”
