Australia Post’s state-of-the-art facility opens at Avalon Airport.

A new era in Australia’s e-commerce industry was marked in October with the opening of Australia Post’s state-of-the-art parcel facility at Avalon Airport, in the heart of the Geelong corridor in Victoria.

As more Australians turn to online shopping, the need for efficient and scalable parcel processing and delivery solutions is becoming increasingly vital.

Located within the Avalon Airport Industrial Precinct, the 23,000 square-metre facility is expected to process a staggering 40,000 parcels per day, with a surge capacity of up to 60,000 parcels per day.

Executive Chairman Avalon Airport, David Fox said the Avalon Airport Industrial Precinct is poised to become one of Australia’s premier intermodal logistics hubs and a significant employer in the region.

“Avalon Airport offers proximity to road, rail, sea, and aviation as well as being a strong competitor in the national jobs market,” said David.

“Avalon Airport’s industrial precinct will employ more than 2,000 people by mid-2024.

“Avalon is centrally located within the Geelong corridor, a vibrant region that boasts a catchment area of 3.3 million people within a 60-minute drive. Notably, this figure surpasses the projected catchment of the proposed Western Sydney Airport by around 800,000 individuals.

“Positioned between Australia’s fastest metropolitan local government, the City of Wyndham, to the north, and the country’s fastest-growing regional city, the City of Greater Geelong, to the south, Avalon is poised for fast, sustained growth with unparalleled access to a substantial talent pool.

“We are delighted to welcome Australia Post to our industrial precinct alongside our other valued residents Cotton On, Petstock and Hanwha Defense Australia.”

Efficient online shopping solutions

According to the 2023 Australia Post eCommerce Industry report, 9.4 million Australian households made an online purchase in 2022, representing 82 per cent of all households. While 2022 saw a period of eCommerce stabilisation with Australians returning to physical stores after a period of lockdowns and restrictions, it is clear that the fundamental shifts in consumer behaviour will remain (2023 Australia Post eCommerce Industry report).

Beyond e-commerce, the facility will undertake mail processing, including letters and small parcels, for the City of Greater Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, and surrounding areas.

Linfox Group Manager Australia Post, Claude Siwek said the modern facility is another key milestone in Linfox and Australia Post’s strategic partnership, dating back to the mid-1990s.

“Linfox has been a preferred logistics partner to Australia Post Group for decades, providing intrastate and interstate transport services nationally.

“We’re committed to continuing our strong support of Australia Post Group as it positions itself to meet the evolving needs of Australian consumers and the insatiable appetite for efficient online shopping solutions.”
